After breakfast, head to the Sarmiento ranger station to begin a scenic trail linking Sarmiento Lake to Laguna Amarga. This wildlife-rich corridor is a favorite for photographers: expect to see guanacos, ñandus, and numerous nesting birds in their natural habitat.
Midway, stop beneath a rock shelter where cave paintings over 6,000 years old tell the story of Patagonia’s earliest hunter-gatherers. The trail continues with ever-changing views of the Paine Massif and, perhaps, signs of puma—drawn here by the abundance of guanacos.
In the afternoon, a second transfer takes you past Estancia Laguna Amarga. Here, herds of guanacos graze the rolling steppe beneath a skyline of craggy peaks. Pause at Paine Waterfall before continuing to Laguna Azul.
The brilliant blue lake and its surrounding wetlands are perfect for birdwatching and a reflective stroll. With the Paine Towers in the distance and wildlife all around, this is a quiet yet vivid end to the day.
